The Skroot chronicles issue #2 The gargoyles of night

Greetings and salutations, avid readers of the Skroot chronicles, part 1. Keep on reading and there shall be no unnecessary bloodshed and plenty of exciting tactical retreats!

Today, the troop was fortunate to be accompanied by a Jozefo, driven bard and new arrival in Helix. Included in our ranks was Scamdalf, a wizard of a quickly growing repute in the guild. Tony three-hands also tagged along, a man with worryingly much experience for a trade in which I'd think you'd die early!
Gathered around the beer-stained table, a deal was struck, a covenant sealed. We were to claim the treasures past the wizard’s gate or die trying. Arriving onto the Barrow known as KK29, we became instantly aware of the sentry that had been placed to guard it, we were not surprised and acted according to plan (should you hear otherwise it’s baseless slander). Joszefo and Scamdalf whispered words and played their fiddles until the man followed their every whim. Now captive, he explained the trap installed beyond, gargoyles, which could be bypassed by those marked by the unholy star.

< A few paragraphs appear ruined by grease and spilt ale>

Having made our way through the double-layered secret doors and tricked its slimy abominable guardians to fight the gargoyles, they tasked me, Skroot, with clearing the room of traps. Whilst carefully (and very bravely!) attempting to remove the magical chainmail, a gigantic clockwork scorpion tumbled from unseen heights. It nearly struck me with its poison stinger, were it not for the potent magics of Scamdalf. Now left open, it was easy pickings for our ranged weapons.

Our prize stood before us, a chest of solid gold and magical mithril chainmail, seemingly made for Skroot’s pre-supple body. Heading out from the tomb, our moods were high as we had broken a spell of fruitless expeditions.

Skroot's notes (BaaL)

  • Orcus cultists reinforced KK29 entrance with 4 powerful gargoyles and a sentry ready to ring the alarm. (Gargoyles can be fooled by painting the unholy star upon your forehead.)
  • Cultists seem to have stopped trapping interior sections of the maze in favour of the gargoyles.
  • A 30' pole has been left by the entrance to the sarcophagi room, for whoever wishes to reach the wizard corpse and claim its loot. McDump's corpse is likely in there, re-animated. Do not pass the threshold after the door.
  • Church seems suspicious of us after sighting with entranced Cultists.
